Door Closers with Parliament Hinges

Door Closers and Parliament Hinges

Can a door closer be fitted to a door that has parliament hinges?

Not all closers are compatible with doors fitted with parliament projection hinges. These special hinges are unique in the way they project the door away from the door jamb, architrave and adjoining wall face, allowing the door to open a full 180 degrees.

Rutland Door Closer TS.9205 in dark bronze

The Rutland TS 9205 is our recommended door closer model for use with projecting hinge doors. Fitted pull-side, this closing device allows the correct opening action of parliament hinges that have up to 25mm hinge pin projection. A 25mm hinge pin creates a 50mm distance between the door and wall and is the most common size in use. No additional accessories or special fitting arrangements are needed for this configuration, so the provided template enables straightforward installation.

As well as being fully functional with parliament hinges, the Rutland TS 9205 comes in a variety of metallic finish options, enabling a high chance of matching the look of existing hinges and other hardware. This is particularly important given the visual impact value that parliament hinges have. Rutland offer a number of brass finishes, stainless steel, nickel, bronze, silver and black, to suit all styles.

Replacement Door Closers for Fire-doors with Projection Hinges

The door closer must be the correct rating where fire-doors are concerned.  The closer control device is a key component of any fire-door on an access and egress route, so needs to be fitted and maintained in line with its original specification. All hardware on fire doors should be fire rated and any replacements should match the original door manufacturer’s specification. Check the EN 1154 six digit grade rating on the original closer, or ask for expert advice. A general guide on choosing the right door closer for the door’s weight and size can be found here.

The Rutland TS 9205 closer has been independently tested and certified for fire resistance under EN 1154 by Certifire, and is suitable for power adjustment up to size 5 (doors from 40kg to 110kg,  1,250mm max width).

Closers on doors with parliament hinges are fitted on the pull-side. If this means mounting it externally then we recommend the marine-grade stainless steel version of the TS.9205 which has grade 3 corrosion resistance.

A little bit more about Parliament Hinges

Also known as wide-throw, butterfly, or projection hinges, these distinctive door hinges have extra-wide wings that protrude out from the normal hinge line. Their purpose is to throw the doors open from a pivot point that’s away from the wall, so a door can be opened 180 degrees without bumping into framework, wide trim or wall fittings. They are very popular on French patio-style door both internally and externally as they allow the door to fold fully back against the wall.

As a lot of the hinge is always visible, the aesthetics of the design and colour are often more important than hidden hinges. With a history stretching back to the 17th century, these hinges are often associated with historical properties, although in high chrome or nickel finishes can look great in modern settings. Nobody seems to remember how parliament hinges got their name, it seems reasonable to assume they were invented to overcome the deep architraves used in Westminster Palace, the 'mother parliament'.

The cantilever hinge design means the door weight has more leverage on the pin, so expect thicker steel and a higher price than normal butt hinges. On heavy doors, it might be necessary to rebate parliament hinges a little further back into the door  – check the supplier’s specifications and instructions.

Parliament Hinge Standards

If you are specifying door closers for a project, please contact us for any advice or technical documentation.

Standard parliament 'butterfly' hinges fall with BS EN 1935 (Single Axis Hinges).

Fire-rated parliament hinges are available, which need fitting with intumescent seals supplied with them. If you need hinges for fire doors, look out for EN 1935 “Fire Rated” on the product and on it’s Declaration of Performance, and the UKCA or CE mark clearly stated.

Below is the full 8 digit rating system for EN 1935:

1st Digit – Category of Use (1 = light duty, 4 = severe duty)

2nd Digit – Durability (4 = 25,000 test cycles, for light duty doors, 7 = medium, heavy and severe duty door hinge)

3rd Digit – Door mass (0 = 10kg, 7 = 160kg). If you want an estimation of a door weight, there is a formula which is often used for practicalities onsite.

Digit 4 – Suitability for fire/smoke doors (Grade 0 = Not suitable, Grade 1 = suitable, subject to assessment of the hinge’s contribution to the fire resistance of the specified door assembly.

Digit 5 – Safety – only has 1 grade (pass)

Digit 6 – Corrosion resistance (0 = no resistance defined, 4 = very high resistance)

Digit 7 – Security (0 = not for burglar resistance, 1 = provides a degree of security)

Digit 8 – Hinge grade (of 14 grades, 10 are suitable for doors of various weights and duty cycles). Eg EN 1935 grade 13 hinges are tested to 200,000 cycles on a sample door weighing 120kg.  grade 10 is tested on a 120kg door to 200,000 cycles.
